Afternoon trekking to Roque Nublo - the sacred rock in Gran Canaria. If you plan to see this unique natural attraction and you like walking in the mountains in peace and without crowds, I recommend the hiking trail from the parking lot at 12 km on the road GC-60 to Roque Nublo. The length of the route, both ways, is about 7 km. For more information on this beautiful Canary Island visit: Gran Canaria tourist attractions and sightseeing.
You can get to Roque Nublo (in the translation: the Cloud Rocks) by several trekking routes. One of them starts from a small parking lot on the GC-60 road.
The trail starts on a small parking lot near the GC-60 road - I marked this place on the map.
We went up the rocks. On the way we pass a dam and a characteristic rock: Roque Elba.
The mountains look like a rocky desert from a distance. After entering the trail, we felt like in a botanical garden. There are many beautiful and exotic plants here. There is a blooming houseleek in the picture.
Canary pines grow on rocks - amazing mountain landscapes.
Roque Nublo (Rock of Clouds) is 80 meters high. It is a former place of worship of aborigines - native inhabitants of the island.
There is a peak of Teide volcano in Tenerife above the clouds, over 100 km away.
It is really cold in the mountains in the evening. You have to dress well because after sunset, there are about 10 degrees Celsius.
The last rays of the setting sun illuminate Roque Nublo (1813 m) - the second highest peak in Gran Canaria. We must hurry down to the car in the parking lot because in the Canary Islands it gets dark very quickly. Here is a dark night half an hour after sunset.
December view of the sun setting behind Roque Nublo. To take this photo I had to be patient because for half an hour before sunset the whole view was obscured by clouds. The temperature dropped to 5 degrees Celsius and a strong wind was blowing. Just before sunset, the clouds thinned for a few minutes and this was the view. Perseverance was rewarded.
