Câmara de Lobos is a charming town on the south coast of the island. Looking at this small center with a bay and a fishing port, it is quite difficult to realize that it is the second most populous town in Madeira. Câmara de Lobos is not far from the west of Funchal. I recommend a walk along the promenade along the ocean shore.
Camara de Lobos and Cabo Girao cliff
Câmara de Lobos can be translated as "chamber of wolves" - the name was given by the discoverers of the island when they found this bay where seals (lobos-marinhos) lay on the beach. Lobos-marinhos in translation means sea wolves.
A natural cove surrounded by rocks and a congealed lava breakwater has become the perfect place for a harbor and settlement.
If someone asks me: what to see in Madeira? I will definitely recommend Câmara de Lobos - it is a beautiful town with a natural harbor and interesting architecture integrated into the Atlantic coast and the surrounding steep slopes of the mountains. I show more interesting places and tourist attractions in the gallery: Visiting Madeira.
Rocky coast with swimming pools, amazing colors of the ocean, bright brick-tiled houses, steep hills and terraced cultivation. These are the characteristic elements of the Madeira landscape.
Fishing boats in the Camara de Lobos
Parking for fishing boats and cars in the center of Câmara de Lobos.
View of the city and the Cabo Girao cliff
The city is almost like a model and these amazing buildings on the slopes of the mountains. In the background you can see the Church of St. Sebastian (Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião) and of course the impressive 589 m high Cabo Girâo cliff with a glass terrace at the top.
Can you see this boat that is just entering the port? We have been observing it for a long time as it floated on the full ocean. You need to have the courage to leave a safe bay on such a boat and set off for a fishing trip to the Atlantic.
Pictures of the Camara de Lobos
When I look at the steep slopes where people build houses or grow plants in Madeira, I am full of admiration for their skills and imagination.
Camara de Lobos from a bird's eye view
It's hard to believe but it's the last day of February. The weather forecast for the whole week showed rain and clouds. But as you can see, it wasn't that bad :-) . Sun, little clouds in the sky, around 20 degrees Celsius and no wind - just fly and admire - I wish I was a bird ....
Promenade from Camara de Lobos to Funchal
You can walk this promenade along the ocean from Câmara de Lobos to Funchal. Unfortunately, there is a closed tunnel in the area of Formosa beach by the cliff and Doca do Cavacas lava pools, so you have to walk a bit through the city but the maps on your phone will help you with this :-) I recommend such a walk!
