Trekking in the mountains around Maspalomas
Gran Canaria is a mountainous island. There are high and rocky mountains a few kilometers from the coast of the ocean. We went to the beach in the morning and in the afternoon we went to the mountains near Los Palmitos - it is only about 10 km from Maspalomas. We left the car at the Mirador de Ayagaures viewing point and went a dirt road through a small settlement towards the mountains. The map showed that the bottom of the Barranco de los Palmitos will be a tourist trail, but I will say immediately - do not look for any signs - there is only a path. You can also see the pyramids of stones arranged by tourists from time to time. There, you can feel like the first explorers of the Canary Islands - you have to go through the bushes and wander between gigantic agaves - a great adventure!
There is about 10 km from Maspalomas to the car park at the Mirador de Ayagaure viewing point. You can get here quickly and go straight to the mountains.
Climbing the boulders - bouldering
We walked through the village and entered into the ravine Barranco de los Palmitos. We walked up the trough of the dry stream. There you have to climb some boulders - almost like bouldering - great fun!
The edge of the ravine is vertical rocks. There is no route here so we are looking for a way to go.
We were able to go up after a few meters of climbing :-) Here you can see the gorge: Barranco de los Palmitos and the Montaña del Rey summit behind it.
The mountains on Gran Canaria are impressive. A picture of the mountains: Montana de los Palmitos, Montaña del Rey there is even Roque Nublo in the distance.
View from above - the small Canarian settlement through which we passed two hours ago.
Interesting places on Gran Canaria
Interesting places and amazing views - rocky mountains and ocean and tourist towns: Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas in the distance.
Roads in the mountains of Gran Canaria is a good topic for a photo gallery. Narrow and winding roads lead through mountain landscapes. The distances between the villages are not large eg from Ayagaures to Arteara it is 18 km but the journey time is 1 hour and 10 minutes.
The sun is already low - it's time to come back. We still have about 3 km to the car. We managed to find the path that we went down to the gorge and from there the way to the parking lot. The entire route today is about 7 km - not much but very interesting.
