Gran Canaria is a great island for holidays. There it is warm and sunny all year round - especially in the south of the island. We like to go there in autumn or winter, when it's cold and dark in Poland, to change the climate, catch some sun, boost energy and feel summer in the middle of winter :-)

Gran Canaria is the perfect island for those who like natural attractions: landscapes, ocean and mountains - so it's great for us! You can go to one of the wild beaches hidden in the rocky coves in the south of the island in the morning and in the afternoon go to the mountains or explore interesting places.
The north coast of Gran Canaria
There are several small but very interesting towns and villages worth seeing on the north coast of the island. Before a trip to the north, I recommend that you pay attention to the weather forecast because it can be completely different than in the south - it is cooler there, the sky is more cloudy and there is often quite a strong wind.
From the first visit to the Canary Islands, I was delighted with the local architecture - colorful houses, built almost one on top of the other, create a unique mosaic perfectly blended into the rocky landscape. You can see more pictures of colorful houses in the gallery: Gran Canaria - Architecture
A good example of interesting Canarian architecture is the picturesque village of Caleta de Arriba, built on a small rocky peninsula. I really like such places and I always try to find them on the map before I go on vacation. I also check the directions of the world to find out what time of day there will be good light for taking pictures and admiring the views.
Amazing places in the Canaries
Top view of Caleta de Arriba. This small town on the north coast of Gran Canaria captivated us and we will want to come back here for longer.
Pictures from the Canary Islands
Such landscapes with colorful houses on the hills are the first views you can see when landing in Gran Canaria. Simple forms but look very interesting from above.
Driving along the north coast from east to west in the evening just before the end of the day we reached Puerto de Sardina. The houses on the hill illuminated by the last rays of the sun looked amazing! Gran Canaria has quite a lot of such small towns that look fabulous from above.
The northern side of the island is cooler and wetter, so there are more fields and crops. There are a lot of banana plantations around the city of Gáldar.
Banana plantations in the Canary Islands
Dwarf Cavendish banana trees are grown in the Canary Islands. It is a low variety of banana tree that grows to about three meters in height. Bananas are half the size of those from the Caribbean or South America, but they are sweeter.
The south coast of the island is much warmer, sunnier and drier. You can sunbathe here all year round. These places are overrun with tourists and there are many famous holiday resorts here.
The central part of the island is occupied by mountains. The highest peak is Pico de las Nieves, 1,949 meters high, and can be reached by car or by hiking trail. When going to the mountains, it is worth taking warmer clothes with you because when you leave the resort and the thermometer shows 28 degrees Celsius, it can be, for example, 15 at the top, and in the evening the temperature can drop below 10.
Mountain landscapes in Gran Canaria are amazing - steep slopes, deep valleys, interesting rock formations. For people fascinated by the mountains, it is a very nice place to go hiking, especially in autumn and winter, when there is snow in the mountains in many places around the world. The highest rock visible in the photo is Roque Nublo.
View from the hiking trail to Montaña de Altavista - see: best trekking in Gran Canaria. If you are going to the mountains in the Canary Islands and plan to stay on the trail until the evening, always take warm clothes and a good flashlight with you. It gets dark very quickly there, it gets completely dark and cold after sunset.
We visited Gran Canaria during the winter months several times. Both in December and January in the south of the island it was warm and sunny. Typical summer weather with temperatures around 23-27 degrees Celsius. But in the mountains near the highest peaks it was cold and there were places where there was snow. The evening temperatures were below 5 degrees and a cold wind was blowing. I was very cold taking this photo. I waited almost an hour for the clouds to part and the sacred rock Roque Nublo to appear - but it was worth it!
Los Azulejos De Veneguera Gran Canaria
Evening in the mountains of Gran Canaria near the rainbow rocks of Los Azulejos De Veneguera. It is impossible not to see this interesting place while driving along the GC-200 road from Puerto de Mogán to Molino de Viento. There are car parks along the road where you can stop and take a picture or go on a hiking trail. I marked the exact location of these unusual rock formations on the map.
Colorful rocks in the mountains of Gran Canaria
The rainbow rocks of Los Azulejos De Veneguera in the mountains of Gran Canaria are impressive. They are right on the GC-200 road, so you can't miss them.
The best way to explore the island is by road trip. We always rent a car and go ahead. We enter the valleys and wade through them towards the center of the island. Often, these wide and comfortable routes turn into narrow and winding single-lane mountain serpentines, and then the adventure begins.
The Barranco de Arguineguin Gorge is over 15 kilometers long. There are numerous trekking routes in its vicinity and the views from them are breathtaking. When setting out for a hike, it is worth taking with you a larger amount of water, a hat on your head, long-sleeved clothing, because in this area it is rather difficult to find shade.
Agaete is a picturesque village on the west coast of the island at the foot of steep and rocky mountains rising straight from the ocean. There is one of the largest pre-Columbian cemeteries, which is to be made available to tourists as an Archaeological Park.
Houses on the Canary Islands have a very simple form - the towns look as if they were built of blocks. You can see more photos of cities and buildings in the gallery: Gran Canaria - Architecture.
I like photos with lots of details. Canarian architecture viewed from above amazes with the number of colors and shapes. I can look at views like this for hours.
Such golden sunsets over the ocean are the culmination of amazing days in Gran Canaria. I love looking at the ocean - its color, endless waves, immensity act like a magnet... I can admire it for hours...
I recommend Holidays in Gran Canaria especially in autumn, winter and spring - on this wonderful island you can bask, sunbathe and catch energy.
