Fira is the new capital of Santorini. The city is located in the central part of the island, on a high cliff above a small port, to which you can go down the stairs (almost 600 steps are waiting for daredevils) or take the cable car. I recommend visiting Fira early in the morning - then the streets are empty and you can easily get lost in the maze of sidewalks and stairs.
First afternoon walk and first amazing views! Good company, summer weather, warm sea, original architecture, sensational cuisine and Greek peace - the perfect combination for a successful holiday vacation!
The Orthodox Greek church "Agios Ioannis Theologos" in the center of Fira is one of the many small churches on the island with a characteristic dome.
Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral in Santorini
Interesting sculptures and the snow-white magnificent building of the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral in the center of Fira.
We have been to Fira several times at different times of the day and the city is amazing at every hour. However, if you do not like crowds and want to admire the views in peace, I recommend taking a morning walk - Fira will show you a completely different face then.
Classic color combination in the Cyclades - white and all shades of blue. There is the Virgin Mary Theoskepasti Holy Orthodox Church at the Skaros rock.
Walking around Fira with a photographer is a terrible thing for the rest of the trip participants ... Practically every few steps you can stop and take a photo ... Ready pictures are waiting and how to stop ...
Top view of the old harbor (Gialos port) of Fira. Currently, the port of Gialos operates mainly in summer and serves cruise ships, tourist boats going to the volcano and fishing boats. You can get to the port from the city by cable car or go down the stairs.
The buildings on the caldera side of Fira are mostly hotels, apartments, restaurants and bars. When it comes to prices, the rule is simple - the nicer the view, the higher the price.
A slight haze in the air and a blurry line between the sea and the sky... There are amazing colors and light in Santorini!
The rocky slopes of the volcanic caldera are surrounded by architecture that cannot be found anywhere else ... The Fira can be admired for hours ...
One of the many bars and restaurants with views of the volcano.
I was captivated by the peace and quiet in Fira ... It is probably due to the fact that we visited it during the pandemic and in the morning before tourists from cruise ships and hotels went to the streets.
The sun is getting lower, the colors are getting more beautiful ... This magical moment when the world delights with its colors and shapes comes just before the end of the day ...
Before going to Santorini, I heard a lot and read about the amazing sunset that you must see ... and it's best in Oia ... The sunset is indeed magical but I recommend (due to the number of people) to give up Oia and see it from, for example Aktaion restaurant in Firostefani. If you are lucky, you can book a table in the promenade and enjoy the end of the day at dinner.
The day is over, but that doesn't mean the city is going to sleep. Nightlife is just beginning! So if you are looking for fun, this is the perfect time to go to the center of Fira.
