During the weekend in Ostróda, we decided to take advantage of a very interesting tourist attraction of this region - a boat trip on the Elbląg Canal. We chose the longest and most interesting cruise called "Ship on Grass" from the offer of Żegluga Ostródzko-Elbląska. It is almost a five-hour canal trip from Buczyniec to Elbląg. The curiosity of this cruise is five inclined planes, which ships overcome on platforms sliding on rails. We got to the marina in Buczyniec by car and got on the ship there. After reaching Elbląg, a bus was waiting for us, which drove us back to the car.
Canal inclined plane - Elbląg Canal
Inclined plane with a ship cradle in Buczyniec - it's a very interesting view! Water was used to drive the slipway, which, flowing from a higher level to a lower one, sets in motion a water wheel driving the ropes for pulling carts with ships or yachts. What a simple and brilliant solution!
Buczyniec inclined plane
The Buczyniec inclined plane is the first inclined plane on the Elbląg Canal from the Ostróda side. The level difference is 20.62 m and the track length is 490.3 m.
Cruise on the Elbląg Canal
A cruise on the canal is a calm and very interesting trip. The ship sails slowly and there is time to admire nature and landscapes.
Inclined plane of the Elbląg Canal
During the cruise, the ship passes through five inclined planes and thanks to this unique solution it overcomes height differences of almost 100 m. The cruise began at 99.5 m a.s.l. and we finished at sea level. There is the inclined plane in Kąty with 18.88 meters level difference in the photo.
Lower deck of the ship
There are seating places with tables and a small shop where you can buy drinks, snacks and ice cream on the lower deck of the ship.
Ship on the grass
The Elbląg Canal is over 84 km long and is the longest canal in Poland. There are 4 locks and 5 inclined planes on the canal.
Żegluga Ostródzko-Elbląska organizes tourist cruises with cruise ships around Masuria, Warmia, Żuławy and the Elbląg Canal. Tickets for cruises can be bought online or at the offices in Ostróda, Buczyniec and Elbląg.
Cruise on a tourist ship
I recommend afternoon cruises on the Elbląg Canal and Druzno Lake. The evening sun is low and you can see beautiful colorful landscapes.
Tourist cruise through canals, inclined planes and on the Drużno lake lasts almost five hours. It is a very interesting trip for enthusiasts of history and nature. For the last kilometers the route leads through the Drużno Lake Nature Reserve. You can admire countless water birds and unique plants there.
Druzno Lake Nature Reserve
The Drużno Lake and its surroundings are strictly protected. 210 species of water and marsh birds have been observed in the reserve. You can see, among others, gulls, grebes, terns, herons, cranes, ducks and white-tailed eagles.
Drużno Lake (or Druzno) is a very shallow and overgrown lake in Żuławy Wiślane, south of Elbląg. Drużno Lake is a strict nature reserve, there are breeding places for water birds.
Passenger Shipping Harbor in Elbląg
We got off the ship in Elbląg at the Passenger Shipping Marina. The bus was waiting for us there. In less than half an hour we arrived at the car park in Buczyniec where we left the car.
We stayed here:
ul. Michał Kajki 6, Kajkowo 14-100 Ostróda
Our opinion and photos from the 2 * hotel located in Ostróda
The hotel is located in a quiet and peaceful area, about a kilometer from the beach on Lake Sajmino, 3 km from the center of Ostróda and less than 4 km from the Mazury Expo trade fair center.
We had a spacious room with a balcony and a large bathroom with a shower.
WiFi, sauna, billiards, table tennis, bike rental, huge parking, children's playground
The restaurant has very good food and friendly service.
