For thousands of years, Wawel Hill has attracted settlers. Even prehistoric communities appreciated its natural defensive advantages: a limestone escarpment rising over 20 meters above the Vistula River, surrounded by the river and marshlands. Legend has it that a fearsome dragon dwelled in a cave under Wawel, terrorizing the surrounding area. It was defeated by a clever shoemaker, and this story is still celebrated today. The Dragon's Den and the Dragon Monument are popular tourist attractions.
