Secrets of the Neptune Fountain

The Neptune Fountain, built in 1633, is one of the oldest and most recognizable symbols of Gdańsk. This Mannerist figure of the Roman god of the seas and oceans, holding a trident in his hand, was designed to be viewed from all sides. Its unique form, inspired by a broken line, refers to the serpentinata style, giving it a dynamic character. According to one of Gdańsk's legends, it was Neptune who contributed to the creation of the famous liqueur – Goldwasser. Outraged that coins were thrown into the fountain, he struck the water with his trident, breaking the gold into tiny flakes. From that moment on, the shine of these golden particles adorned the magnificent herbal liqueur, which became a hallmark of Gdańsk.
