Mewia Łacha Nature Reserve lies at the mouth of the Vistula River (its cut) into the Baltic Sea and covers about 150 hectares of protected land. Most (approximately 130 ha) is located on the eastern side of the cut in the Stegna municipality, while the remaining part lies to the west on Sobieszewo Island. The reserve’s primary goal is to protect the breeding sites of rare terns and the resting and feeding areas of sandpipers, ducks, and other birds characteristic of the Vistula delta. In summer, flocks of little gulls gather on the sandy flats, reaching up to 40,000 individuals, and in winter, the combined number of gulls and ducks exceeds 100,000. The reserve also contains a small lake inhabited by beavers, and on the sands, one can occasionally spot a small group of grey seals.
