On Sunday, we went for a walk in Mikoszewo. We left the car in the free parking lot near the Mikoszewo-Świbno ferry crossing and headed towards the sea. The path led us through a pine coastal forest and sandy dunes. After walking about 3.3 kilometers, we reached a wide sandy beach near the Mikoszewo Spit. Below are a few photos from this short but very enjoyable walk.

Mikoszewo-Świbno Ferry

Mikoszewo-Świbno Ferry

The ferry connects Mikoszewo with Świbno on the opposite side of the Vistula River, serving as an important shortcut between the Vistula Spit and Gdańsk. It operates seasonally - usually from spring to autumn - and allows pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers to quickly cross the river. This is a convenient option, especially in summer when tourist traffic in the region is at its peak. The crossing takes only a few minutes, and the view from the ferry of the Vistula’s mouth and the surrounding landscape is an added attraction.

The Mouth of the Vistula

The Mouth of the Vistula

The mouth of the Vistula is where the mighty river meets the Baltic Sea, creating a unique landscape. At this point, the Vistula is about 450 meters wide, and its waters blend with the sea’s currents. Walking along the shore, one can feel the power of the river’s flow and see how sand and gravel are shaped by the waves and tides.

Beach in Mikoszewo

Beach in Mikoszewo

The beach in Mikoszewo is a place that captivates with its tranquility and open space. A wide stretch of light sand runs all the way to the horizon, with the mouth of the Vistula River looming in the background. To reach the shore, you must cover about 1.5 km from the village’s main street, but the path runs through a pleasant, shady coastal forest. Additionally, there is a forest parking area about 900 meters from the beach (accessible from Leśna Street), which makes the trip easier. In summer, a guarded swimming area operates on a 100-meter section at access point No. 89. During summer, the beach buzzes with life, but off-season it becomes a peaceful retreat, ideal for long walks, birdwatching, and searching for amber.

Mikoszewo Spit

Mikoszewo Spit

In the small village of Mikoszewo, the newest tourist attraction of Pomerania has appeared - a newly formed sandy spit that has emerged less than a kilometer east of the Mewia Łacha nature reserve. It was created by natural geological processes, as sand was deposited by sea currents and storms around the Vistula River mouth, and experts emphasize that it is still evolving. Its proximity to the reserve raises interest in whether it might eventually connect with Mewia Łacha’s protected dunes. The best perspective for observing the spit’s dynamic changes is from above, revealing the contrast between the Baltic Sea, the Vistula estuary, and the surrounding forest. Mikoszewo Spit is a testament to the power of nature and an attractive destination for walking and cycling tours, perfect for those who want to discover the coastal secrets of Pomerania.

Mewia Łacha Nature Reserve

Mewia Łacha Nature Reserve

Mewia Łacha Nature Reserve lies at the mouth of the Vistula River (its cut) into the Baltic Sea and covers about 150 hectares of protected land. Most (approximately 130 ha) is located on the eastern side of the cut in the Stegna municipality, while the remaining part lies to the west on Sobieszewo Island. The reserve’s primary goal is to protect the breeding sites of rare terns and the resting and feeding areas of sandpipers, ducks, and other birds characteristic of the Vistula delta. In summer, flocks of little gulls gather on the sandy flats, reaching up to 40,000 individuals, and in winter, the combined number of gulls and ducks exceeds 100,000. The reserve also contains a small lake inhabited by beavers, and on the sands, one can occasionally spot a small group of grey seals.

Vistula Bicycle Route - EuroVelo 9

The Vistula Bicycle Route (EuroVelo 9) in the Pomeranian region runs along both banks of the Vistula River, offering a slower pace of life away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Although the entire route is nearly 300 km long and still under development, many sections are already open, allowing for both short rides and multi-day trips. Along the way, cyclists pass unique arcaded houses, Gothic churches with wooden towers hidden in Żuławy villages, and medieval castles standing proudly over the Vistula Delta.
