Although Gdynia was first mentioned in 1253, which means it has over 770 years of history, it remained a small fishing village for most of that time. It was only after the end of World War I, when Gdynia was returned to Poland under the Treaty of Versailles, that it began to develop rapidly, transforming into a modern city and an important port.
