How old is Gdynia?

How old is Gdynia?

Although Gdynia was first mentioned in 1253, which means it has over 770 years of history, it remained a small fishing village for most of that time. It was only after the end of World War I, when Gdynia was returned to Poland under the Treaty of Versailles, that it began to develop rapidly, transforming into a modern city and an important port.

Who founded the city of Gdynia?

Who founded the city of Gdynia?

Gdynia owes its creation to Tadeusz Wenda, an engineer who designed the construction of the port in the region. Thanks to his work, Gdynia, initially a small fishing settlement, transformed into a modern port city. His vision and commitment to building the port infrastructure became the foundation for the city's further development. The construction of the port in Gdynia began in 1921. Initially, it was a temporary military port and a shelter for fishermen. In 1923, the first harbor basin was opened, and expansion work on the port continued throughout the interwar period.

When did Gdynia gain city rights?

When did Gdynia gain city rights?

Gdynia was granted city rights on March 4, 1926. The city's growth was driven by the construction of the port, which became crucial for Poland. The port had strategic importance, providing access to the sea and serving as a base for the navy, especially in light of the uncertain situation in the Free City of Gdańsk.

What was Gdynia called in the past?

What was Gdynia called in the past?

The former name of Gdynia was Gdina or Gdina Gdini, derived from the Kashubian term "mokra dolina" (wet valley). The first mentions of this settlement appear in documents from the 13th century. For many years, Gdynia was a small fishing village. After Poland regained independence in 1918, during the interwar period, the construction of a modern port began, transforming the settlement into a rapidly developing city. In 1926, Gdynia was granted city rights, becoming one of the most important ports on the Baltic. During World War II, Gdynia was renamed Gotenhafen by the Germans and served as a strategic military port. After the war, the city regained its Polish name and continued its development.

Gdynia has four main beaches: Śródmieście, Redłowo, Orłowo, and Babie Doły. Śródmieście is the perfect choice for families, thanks to the supervised bathing area and many nearby attractions. For those looking for a quieter place, I recommend the beaches in Redłowo, Babie Doły, and Orłowo. Each of them offers relaxation in a natural setting and is less crowded.

Is it possible to walk along the beach from Gdynia to Sopot?

Is it possible to walk along the beach from Gdynia to Sopot?

Yes, it is possible to walk along the beach from Gdynia to Sopot, but it's important to note that it is quite a long distance, so it's a good idea to bring something to drink and eat. You can start the walk from the boulevard in Gdynia or from the pier in Orłowo and head south. The route from the boulevard to the Sopot pier is about 7 kilometers, but you should remember that walking along the beach under the cliff is forbidden, so you need to bypass it through the forest. This is a great opportunity to climb the cliff and enjoy beautiful views of the Gdańsk Bay from above. If you prefer a shorter walk, it's worth starting in Orłowo – then you’ll cover about 4 kilometers to the Sopot pier. However, it’s important to keep in mind that walking on sand can be tiring, so for those without much stamina, the shorter version would be better.
