Who Founded Augustów?

Augustów was founded in 1557 by King Sigismund Augustus, after whom the town was named. Initially, it was meant to serve as a trading center and port, which was crucial for the region's development. Sigismund Augustus, who was also the Grand Duke of Lithuania, decided to establish Augustów in a strategic location on the border of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania. The town quickly gained popularity due to its convenient water connections, and its development significantly influenced the local economy and culture.
