Zygmunt August Square, designed in 1550 by the builder of royal fortresses, Job Praetfuess, is the central point of Augustów. It is surrounded by low eclectic tenement houses, the oldest of which (number 28) dates back to 1801. This is where Napoleon Bonaparte stayed in 1812. The tenement at number 3 has housed the post office since 1945, while the building at number 9 is home to the City Culture Center. In the heart of the square lies a park established in 1847, known for its festivals and concerts. Today, antique fairs and various cultural events take place here. The square features a monument dedicated to those who gave their lives for a free Poland, as well as a column with a statue of Zygmunt II Augustus, erected in 2007 to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the city’s granting of municipal rights.
