Astronomical autumn begins at the moment of the autumnal equinox, when the Sun, in its path across the sky, passes through the equinox point, and day and night are approximately equal in length. This usually occurs around September 22-23 in the Northern Hemisphere. The period of astronomical autumn lasts until the winter solstice, which falls on December 21-22, when the day is the shortest of the year.
