Olsztyn received its city rights on October 31, 1353, granted by the Warmian Chapter. The city was founded under Chełmno law, which provided its inhabitants with specific privileges, such as the right to trade, organize crafts, and establish self-governance. This legal framework enabled Olsztyn to quickly become an important administrative and economic center of Warmia. One of the first undertakings was the construction of the castle, which remains a landmark of the city to this day.
